Enoch Arden

Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Richard Strauss

The epic melodrama Enoch Arden is a combination of one of Tennyson’s most popular works and a piano score by Richard Strauss.

The story explores themes of love and loyalty in a moving story written in eloquent English. Enoch Arden is a poor sailor who has a beloved wife and three children. Facing economic hardship he goes to sea to try and recover his fortune, but is shipwrecked on a desert island. Thought to be lost he returns after ten years, to find his wife happily remarried to his best friend, and the youngest and weakest of his three children dead. He faces an excruciating moral dilemma but with moving and admirable courage makes a decision.

Strauss’s music is, well, brilliantly Straussian. He toured a production of the reading throughout Europe with a renowned actor of the time and gained a greater reputation from it than from his symphonic poems. The music interweaves with the narrative to great dramatic effect and evokes a stunning intensity of mood.

Narrated by Michael Ducarel with the concert pianist Martin Cousin this story of 73 minutes fits conveniently onto a single CD, which includes a booklet with the words of the poem in it.
